Yearning towards love, beauty and peace is a natural human instinct. So when a butterfly stops to flutter on your arm, lotus flowers are sleeping on your shoulders, and the petals drop at your tiptoes… peace will stay in your heart. It is in my search for tranquility that I fell in love with couturier Georges Hobeika and his works of fashion art.
Femininity, romance and elegance are the Lebanese designer’s signature expression. His mother was a seamstress and gave him his first lessons in couture. When war broke out in his native Lebanon, he moved to Paris to pursue his passion and studied his craft with an internship at Chanel. In 1995, he returned to Beirut and established his namesake atelier. Georges Hobeika brings together the precious essence of creativity and the ease of incomparable craftsmanship; he works with the most famous ateliers in Paris: Maison Lesage, Swarovski, Legeron, Solstiss.
For his Fall/Winter 2016-17 Haute Couture collection, he brought nature to the runway, infusing his looks with the virtue of peace contained in heavenly lanterns flying high into the starry evening and spreading, in a bright twinkle, their message of love and harmony. Divine bodies were like moving Shangri-la; every inch of skin was a piece of rich land, covered in foliage and flowers. Every precious texture, dimensional ornament, and spectacular embroidery was a trompe d’oeil of paradise. Indeed, this world can be wonderful. The designer took this collection to express his love of the nature, and his invocation of peace.
Backstage after the show, Hobeika took a moment to thank those closest to him, “I took lots of time on this collection. Fortunately, I have a very good and professional team, [and it is] thanks to them that I can accomplish my vision”.
Xie Xin, the only Chinese model to walk in the show, mused, “I always love Georges Hobeika haute couture collection. I feel so lucky to be his model and it’s my first time! My impression is the gowns are so beautiful, especially the details. And the designer is very nice”.

In this world, especially now, wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all be as peaceful as Hobeika made the room feel, if only for a moment.
